My very good friend Mike had a guitar stolen on Friday. He plays in Failed with me, as well as Acid Witch, and it was stolen at Paychecks while after Acid Witch had finished their set. It's pretty much his main guitar, so it was a big loss.

It's a 1972 Gibson SG, walnut finish with a Bigsby tremolo bridge. The body is pretty beat up and the frets are cut through the binding on the neck, so it's a pretty unmistakeable guitar.

I know there are a few of you on here that are into vintage gear, so I was hoping to spread the word and see if anyone might come across it. We've called every pawn shop and guitar store in the area giving them a heads up, but I figured any help we could get would be appreciated.

Dick move. Mike is a great guy.
I am not surprised. There were a shit load of people at that show and there was no staff monitoring the load in room. I personally saw people not in bands going in out of that room like nobody's business.

Not that I want to laugh about this but I did get a chuckle out of how slick this reward flier looks.

Without going into too much detail, the bar knew who stole the guitar and tried to hide the fact. When they were told that whoever took it would be prosecuted they called up 15 minutes later and claimed they "found it in the alley". When Mike went back the guitar was warm (unlike if it had been in an alley for 5 days) and it was in tune.

Here's the best I can do with the story.

The night of the show, when bands were loading out, Mike went to go get a drink. The bartender took a reeeeeeeaaaally long time to make his drink, only to find out when it was ready, that someone had yanked his guitar and took off out the door. Well, they guys from The Octopus ran after him, but he seemingly vanished.

So Mike finds out what the guy looks like, and starts giving out a description. One of the guys from The Octopus is married to a girl who works for the Metro Times, and is the one who puts on the blowout every year. She recognizes the description, and starts asking around. Cut to Wednesday. The Metro Times girl finds out that the guy in question LIVES ABOVE PAYCHECKS. So she goes down to the venue and demands to either see the guy or have them get the guitar from him. The very nervous looking bartender who was working at the time, who just so happened to be the same bartender that took forever to make Mike's drink, (held him up so the guy could take the guitar) insists that she doesn't know what the Metro Times girl is talking about. A half hour later, the same bartender calls and says they amazingly found the guitar in the alley and Mike went and picked it up.

By the way, the guitar they found in the alley was still in tune when Mike picked it up.

So don't play at Paychecks. They will set up their renters to steal your gear.

Are there legit places to play anywhere in Hamtramack? My band drove eleven hours to play at The Painted Lady a couple years ago and got stiffed.

My brother and I drove to Ann Arbor to play a show at the metal frat and then in hamtramack the next night. Some friends of mine had moved to Ann Arbor, and our band played, too. We were 1974 and Progress. The drive from my home town in Upper Michigan was eleven hours, and after the show the guys there told us that the bar didn't make enough money to pay us anything at all.

Chill And Mingle. That show was ridiculous.
I don't know what happened but there hasn't been a show there in around 3 years.

Thanks for posting this story. I don't go to that venue, but now they're on my definitely do not attend list. I generally avoid all Detroit bar shows. I kind of find that crowd depressing.

What's wrong with that crowd? Just out of curiosity; I'm a pretty regular bar show attendee, and I've seen some pretty damn good shows at local bars. I just don't usually drink at them.

Nothing wrong with them. I'm sure they're good people having a good time. I just choose not to relate. It's a personal thing, I'm sure. I'm trying to reclaim almost everything about the 18-year-old me.
