I would like to help out and spread the word about all the new up rising bands that are popping up all over MI. All I ask is your permission to burn your music onto Cd's and write a review for your band and CD and put together a little zine that would go along with the CD's. I would only sell the CD's/zine to make back the money I spent on the materials to put out the distro. If any bands are interested in this please get at me.

I'm not sure I understand this idea. You're going to burn CD-Rs of bands' recorded output (that was already released in a different format) and sell them? Maybe you could just make a zine that would direct people to the bands so they could sell & make money on their own releases...or maybe get bands to let you do a CD-R compilation to go along with the zine.

Maybe I misinterpreted you, though. Good luck!

Hey I do a fanzine out of the local area and I'd love to be a part of this. It's called Criminal Behavior, and I usually cover local bands and local events, along with a few interviews from national bands. http://criminalbehaviormi.blogspot.com
I also do print versions.
My e-mail address is auntysocialdri@yahoo.com

Well I go out of state a lot and I find myself going to shows, local record/CD's stores and junk. I think it would be a cool idea to set up at a merch table at an out of state show and basically give away the bands music (with their permission of course) along with the review zine so people could read about the band a little and pick up there music on a burned CD.I was thinking I would sell 4 cd's and the review zine for like $1, I would not be making any profit off this what so ever I just would like to get the money back I spend on the paper, CD's, CD cases and what ever else I buy for the distro.I am just trying to get bands together who are interested in the idea of getting there music out for free with my help.

A comp on a cassette would be cool. Super cheap, some bands might be into more than just giving away there stuff for free if they are still trying to sell records.

I like this.

I think this sounds less like a "distro" and more like some sort of label. I think you'd be better off doing some sort of compilation.

I would be more inclined to buy a legit cassette compilation than a random CD-R, as I have a hard enough time listening to legit CD-R demos that people send me. I think a lot of people view those as disposable.

Yeah, I think this would be a lot more of a reasonable idea. I was just in a conversation about how comps were becoming less and less popular as time goes on because of internet availability and so on, and my argument was: a lot of comps were cool because there were exclusive tracks, or bands that not only you might not have heard of, but might not have the means to hear about. I think this could be both. It could have some exclusive tracks from some better known local bands, and some not so exclusive tracks from bands that people might not have heard about, even in the oh so fast internet age.

I hope I'm not sounding negative, by the way, because I support your idea. I think some discussion about it (as you started this thread) could potentially flush out some good ideas that may help you realize a better end result.

Exclusive track comps are bad ass, and if it was done with bigger bands doing exclusive tracks and everyone else using tracks from albums as suggested I think it would work out well. I had the idea that if a list of all the bands to be on the comp was made they could all throw in money to make a decent legit looking pressed cd to go with the zine/review thing.

You're asking permission to pirate music?

Not to get all Debbie Downer either, but a word of warning, comp CDs are the deadest format there is. Expect to have 900 in your closet for the rest of time. Ebullition won't even pick them up for distro anymore because they just don't sell.

Half my distro is Michigan stuff and I never sell any of it on any format.

Most CDs, really. Dead format. Comp CDs are probably even lower on the totem pole.

Yeah, that is totally true. I mean I still buy CDs, but I know I'm in the minority. That's why I think a tape wouldn't be that bad. Tapes have become so popular again, that I think people would pick it up based partly on that.

You can also do professional looking tapes so cheap that it's stupid.
