Fighting Uruk-Hai

http://detroithc.blogspot.com/

After the (merciful) demise of the +/- board, no single site has seemed to take its place as a center for information. This new site is not a message board. The emphasis is on content and information, not on whatever bullshit people feel like chatting on about. Posting is limited to people in bands, who do labels, organize shows, basically anyone who does something positive. To be fair, commenting on posts is open to anyone. This is try and keep the signal to noise ratio good so that the site can be useful.

The site is in its infancy and will be continually improved, but check it out, and get in touch through the email address on there if you want to be able to post. This isn't just my project, there are a lot of people behind it, with the common idea to bring the scene together more.

I don't intend to shoot down anyone's efforts, but I don't think either of these work particularly well. I hated the drama side of the +/- board, but it got the job done as far as listing things and being the place to look for shows and such.

Coleman wrote:i'll check it out, I think this forum works pretty well though

Seems like traffic is pretty slow. Most people who go to shows probably have no idea it exists. There is little to no discussion of the bands we're basing this site around (the punker side of hardcore). The shows forum has no organization.

Myspace sucks and runs like a one legged dog. Add in one million links and giant show ads, and besides that I'm not interested in 95% of those bands.

On this new site, you can look at the calendar and see all the shows (that people have posted) listed in one easy to read place. Efficient, easy to keep track of. Each one can be expanded for more info and then closed back up. Bands can post news, mp3s or videos and it isn't going to get buried under people discussing what they like to put on their pizza or some such.

Pizza discussions have their place, and that place is here. I'm glad this site exists for what it does, and for someone trying to get info out to people. But at the same time, I saw room for improvement, or at least a different focus. We'll see how it goes. Maybe people are only really interested in pizza and I will have wasted a couple weekends on this experiment. I think it will work out fine.

Had no clue about that Toledo show with Boiling Over and Poison Planet. That's going to be sweet.

Disconnected and NRR will both be really good, too. NRR may not have a bass player, but that doesn't matter.

Disconnected is one of my favorite current bands. NRR ruled when I saw them at the Black Cherry a few months ago. Boiling Over and Poison Planet both are always great. Will try to be at this show for sure.

Back to this blog, though, I think it's started to fill a gap that can't really be provided by this messageboard or by MySpace.

If you remember the old +/- MIHC site, while it had its many flaws, it was a central location for information. It seems like a lot of the people here know each other and it seems like most people who go to shows in the area probably don't even know this exists. I've also tried to keep an eye on that MySpace site, but it's pretty cluttered and I've never felt like spending too much time with it.

Hopefully this blog will be a central location where people from all sides of hardcore punk can post information, leave the drama out of it, and start building something again.

This will never happen.

People get their dicks hard/pussies wet for drama.

Revamping the Michigan Hardcore myspace has been on my to do list for a while now. I know it needs some cleaning up but as far as show listings go I think that's a great resource. I wish more bands would send me the info for their shows. It'd be updated much easier and more quickly that way. I also wish there was a way to see which shows have been recently posted/updated so you don't have to scroll through everything every time you check it out.

My goal with the variety of coverage of bands in the shows listing is to not limit it to hardcore and punk but cover all things independent and DIY happening in MI to the best of my ability, though I do think punk and hardcore holds the majority of what's posted on there. From what I can recall the +/- site did this as well.

Of course things are going to be left out due to time, not being able to know about everything going on (this would be remedied by more people sending me their shows!) and a certain level of discretion on my part but overall if an independent promoter in MI is doin the show I'll most likely put it on there.

Myspace does suck but I like that with the calendar you can view everything at once and it has spaces for all the details. I don't know about anyone else but at least with that page there isn't the possibility of things getting lost in a sea of drama and inane posts. Sure there's the comments section but no one really touches those anymore and you can easily avoid them. If you're looking for shows all you have to do is go to the calendar and check out the flyers ya know?

Another advantage of that myspace page is that not only do a lot of people that are in the core group of the scene (regular hardcore show-goers/those that read and post on this board, most of the kids in the local bands kickin' it right now etc.) check it out but a TON of people that aren't regular show go-ers/"in the know" do as well which makes for a wider depth of coverage to a broader audience and I think that is what's needed to keep building the scene and making shows as good as they have been lately.

People are going to do what they want however and some just want to keep things limited to what they're most interested in. I understand that but I also think it'd more productive if we all worked together on one shows listing/info center rather than having multiples.

Whats the point in saying this? Nobody fucking cares.

I think that the blogspot is much more organized than the myspace page which, no offense andrew, I hate visiting because of all the fliers and shit that makes my already terrible computer run worse.

As long as being heavy-handed with moderating the comments doesn't constitute "drama," I think everything will be alright.

The only way I'd ever get "butthurt" over a joke would be if it was so funny I shit my pants. Comments like that aren't funny, they are the reason people stop making an effort.

You're right Frank. Everyone's going to stop making an effort on the hardcore community because I made a joke, serious or not. The world stops when I dislike something.

I just moved all the fliers into a photo album so you don't have to wait for them to load and scroll through them to get to the calendar. Hopefully that will help a bit.
