I realize these things are kind of lame, but we really want to record our EP with Chris Trestain and then press and package it (meaning we've been scrambling to get some cash up front). We figured anyone who helps out would have already been slightly interested in picking the EP up anyways (or at least would have been a supporter of us if not a fan of the music), so you could think of it as a preorder if you're interested since anyone who donates $5 or more gets a free copy of the disc. We have several other monetary based rewards set up on the Kickstarter page as well.

Either way, thanks for taking the time to read all this.

And here's a video with some more information about the project/band.

what ever happened to playing shows and selling merch to fund your band?

Being broke college students and putting all the money made each night in merch right back into the gas tank is what happened haha (not that I'm trying to make excuses).

Realistically, it ends up being a good market tester. If no one donates, it means no one would have bought your EP anyways. If people donate, they would have bought the EP after the fact, so it serves almost as a preorder and allows the band to fund the release with the money up front instead of cutting corners.

Like I said, though, I'm aware of how lame and "unpunk" it is.

Devil's advocate. Why do that when you can fund an entire recording and pressing process in advance through donations? This is essentially the equivalent to a preorder; everyone gets the music eventually and the band doesn't have to wait around until they raise enough money.

That ignores the simple fact that preorders suck!

This is why I have other people release my bands' records. If nobody else wants to release it, it shouldn't be pressed.

Or like John said, instead of taking time to find someone to help release it, cut out the middle man and do it yourself. If you don't want to donate, then you don't. It's as simple as that. You forget that people donating are people that are choosing to do so (meaning people that would have bought the EP in the first place). If you don't want to or you don't think it's solid music, then you donate give the band anything. It's realistically as simple as that.

Having self-released a number of things, I would argue that using a Kickstarter is NOT releasing it yourself.

Don't get me wrong, this is no skin off my back. Good luck to you.

$50 (or more) - Free shirt, free copy of the EP, a "thank you" in the liner notes, and a chance to be featured on the EP with the band.

I'm very interested in doing guest vocals on this EP, I should donate.

Trust me, I'm well aware it's not an honor, privilege or anything. People just started offering that much dough and we tried thinking of whatever we could do to maybe make it somewhat worth it for them having given us that much money.
