I'm working on starting an online blog/zine that publishes perspectives on lyrical content in American hardcore, or any thoughtful insights or critiques on hardcore music and the physical space we create for it (run out of Michigan).

This is the web address for the site:

http://yourweightinwords.tumblr.com/

If you're interested, read more about what we're looking to publish on the site and send something our way. You can find a link to our submission que by clicking on the Submit page on the site.

If there are other boards you'd like to advise me to post a call for submissions in, that would be awesome.

Questions and feedback at this stage are really appreciated.

Thanks all,

Dillon

I feel like there are a lot of great sites and zines out there doing reviews and that sort of thing already, which is great. But I'm looking to create a space that comments more on the culture of hardcore and surrounding scenes. I suppose that leaves a pretty broad aesthetic, but I'm really interested in what other people have to say about hardcore music and the physical space we create for it.

For example, an idea a friend of mine has been throwing around is whether or not 'street life' sort of lyricism in hardcore is an effective expression of poverty and violence, or if it is really just exploiting it.

I'm not sure if that helps at all. It's hard for me to articulate on what exactly we're looking for because we're open to whatever you have to say about hardcore and punk. Whatever you've taken the time to think about and write an essay or column on, we'd love to read and consider publishing.

I hope that helps some.

This is exciting to me. I'm not sure how soon I will be able to get something together, but I definitely have a couple of ideas for this.

I am excited that you are excited. Tell your friends! The more people that know about this the faster we can get more content up on the site.

this seems like a pretty cool idea. i think it would be really really cool if you did a print version of it. i dont know if its like this for other people, but i find that i dont take most online stuff as seriously and just kind of scroll through it without giving it much thought.

This sounds fucking awesome.

I do pretty much agree with Frank.
It's not that I don't take online stuff seriously, but I do much prefer print. Because for whatever reason it seems to be more memorable, I usually am able to focus and think about what I am reading more, and I am a fan of tangible things.

I know this is jumping way ahead, but it seems like it would be cool to do it online, and then once there is enough good material compiled, to do a short print run.

But either way, print or not, I'm excited for this!

I think that being able to hold that physical artifact would be cool too, and I hope that someday a we could do something like a yearly print anthology. But for now, I think online is the way to go. Small press lit mags that are online are able to reach an insane amount of people every year that with print publishing they wouldn't be able to accomplish.
For example, [PANK] magazine moves 1,000 copies in print each year and 80,000 copies online. http://www.pankmagazine.com
Small press magazines (and me) have either little to absolutely no budget. Being able to publish work online is cheaper and allows us to reach more readers.

I also like that with online publishing, we can generate immediate conversation or debate through comments, something that wouldn't be as accessible to readers if we only published in print. I really hope that this project generates enough response to be able to publish a regular print edition though, some day.

Online and print are both important and are useful, but for different purposes. I've found that with my zine that I print (I primarily do print, and just keep a few things updated online) that people are a lot more interested and in the know about the online version if they receive a hard copy first. There's a million and one different forums one can troll looking for information on hardcore, but if you go to a show and pick up a zine, you can find that information right then and there.

Agreed, different purposes require different ways of distribution. I'd love to be able to print and distribute my Zine at shows, but that's not really an option for me. I live at least 6 hours away from cities that have hardcore/punk shows.

Also, anyway I can get a copy of your Zine?

i liked the idea of a online zine that prints annually or quartely or whatever your thinking. print is always a plus. its like when you download a comic book, you just dont get the same feel. this sounds sweet though. doing more than just another band review blog is a great idea.

when are you planning to start this up?

I've actually already launched the website and you can check it out here: http://www.yourweightinwords.tumblr.com

There isn't much content up yet because I haven't received many submissions. I'm just going to keep trying to spread the word through forums and what not with hopes to attract more writers. So submit something.
