It's 2011, gas is through the roof and these touring bands are from CA. Inflation does affect punk whether you agree or not and the prices of shows and merch should be adjusted accordingly so the bands, venue, promoter etc. are all able to at least break even and cover their expenses so shows can continue to happen and bands from the other side of the country can continue to tour.

I understand, and totally agree with what you are saying, but you should also keep in mind that OFF! is not a DIY band at all, so don't expect DIY mentality.

Because they're named after a mosquito repellant.

Isn't Black Flag the name of a rat poison too? Keith Morris must have grown up with a lot of pest problems, amirite?

I'm not trying to be DIY police here, but my opinion is fuck Keith Morris. Hardcore didn't die in 86, there are new bands worth listening to (besides the ones he got kicked out of that OFF! sound like), and Vice records can get fucked. Tour is all clubs, some of them 21+. Of course its $15.

black flag, off, raid, who cares. just my opinion.

He said this in American Hardcore, right? I guess he goes to a lot of current shows in California, so maybe he changed his mind. All I know is I want to go support one of the guys who got me into punk.

I know what you mean; hardcore didn't die in 1986, but it certainly did change in a way that differed from what hardcore was from 1980 to 1986.
What's wrong with clubs? I mean, yeah, I'll grant you an alcoholic setting isn't my ideal venue, either, but it has greater holding capacity, better promotional ability (booking at strictly DIY venues is really fucking hard unless you know a guy that knows a guy that knows a guy), and inevitably, some of the people who like old-school hardcore like OFF! like to drink a little.
I guess I mean: Look past the whole setting of where it's being held at, and focus on the message the band is sending. I'll take OFF! in an overpriced bar any day over some new incarnation of Angry Aryans at an abandoned warehouse.

Off is a gimmick retro act. Professional punks. Let's hope they bring Debbie Gibson along from that last Circle Jerks record. If Off are considered a DIY band, then the term truly has no meaning anymore (probably the case).

Better re-evaluate Kevin, this hardcore supergroup's van runs on vegetable oil!

1. In most cases, I'd gladly pay MORE for shows to only have 3 bands. Fuck mini-fests.

2. Off! sucks.

I was thinking about this when I was taking a dump this morning (appropriate), and a few things came to mind. One, spicy food has started to burn my butt for the first time in my life, never used to. Two, the question shouldn't be "how aren't they a DIY band?" but rather "How are they?" Punk bands are not automatically DIY, its a very false assumption. Do they put out their own records, book their own shows, fund everything out of pocket or work with close friends, and promote an international network of cooperation? I'm guessing the answer is "no" or "not really" to all five. Three, another issue is authenticity. Yeah, these are old punk dudes... who haven't done anything worthwhile (or punk) in almost 25 years (don't know their specific bios, but I wager its a safe assumption). I'm still a 15 year old when it comes to this, I want my hardcore as authentic as possible. Metal is inherently inauthentic due to the nature of the lyrics (though most hardcore really fails this test as well) and business orientation, for the most part it's a mainstream rock genre. Come to terms with this or you miss out on some of the best music in the world. But as Priehs eloquently noted, Off are no Judas Priest. My life is not made particularly poorer by ignoring them. Fourth, they're just cheesey. Band name is a reference to Black Flag. Cover art is a reference to Black Flag. Gimmick package of their album as four 7"s is a reference to Black Flag turned into inside out with extra cheese. Vice records? American Hardcore the Movie? Vegetable oil power Scion?

Now let's compare them to a band like the State. The State go back just as far in hardcore. Put out their own records then, put out their own records now. No sponsorship, no management, no gimmicks other than blistering punk, and.... They couldn't draw unless you gave them crayons and paper. Off are indeed a supergroup, meticulously managed and sold, as authentic as artificial food coloring. And until they can write a song like "Easy Victim", I'll still be going to see the State instead.

I'll Tag Team that with a Whoomp! (there it is).

I mean it's just music, fuck it, if you like it, have fun. Just don't read some greater ethical significance or integrity into that isn't there.

I find more fascination in your bowel movements than I do in Off.

That's some good publicity right there.

Just to add to the DIY talk

Ryan Felton.

Ryan Felton.

From an optimistic perspective, they could just be using the resources they have at their age to tour and promote whatever ideas or ethics they might be promoting at shows.

But, Vice Records, Carson Daly and some dumb fucking rant about how punk is lame now by referencing Warped Tour in an interview? Morris garners no relevant opinion about punk and most likely if asked why they wanted to tour with Trash Talk would say because they put out their own records, have a "violent live show" and do things the way they used to and should be or something as lame as that.
