ok, so I have lived in Ann Arbor for about a year now. before that i lived in grand rapids for a year. it seems to me that the hardcore/punk scene isn't as united or as strong here as it is in west michigan. i may be wrong, maybe i haven't been looking in the right places. don't get me wrong there are some great bands here. i am totally open to opinion on this one. if i am right then maybe we can do something to change it.

didn't you live in kalamazoo? place sucks. grand rapids is awesome, lots of good shows and great people.

ann arbor doesn't have a ton going on all the time. there are shows at metal frat and a few punk houses. i wouldn't say that "ann arbor hardcore" exists as a scene.

Yes but I was a pretty frequent Grand Rapids goer. Shit still sucked.

yeah grand rapids was more of what i was talking about there were a few things happening in traverse city, but i would like to see ann arbor be able to rival that. it seems like with the college here there would be an influx of new ideas and people every year that could facilitate such a scene. also the economic depression of detroit, you would think would bring about good punk music, as it did in london in the late seventies when things were bad there.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.........
This is a fake poster.
The only things happening in relation to hardcore in Traverse City are when John McKaig and Josh Holton put on shows at The Inside Out Gallery, which is few and far between.
No one really ever makes a drive up here, especially if there is a Detroit and Chicago date of the show coming through.
Now, that changed when some friends came to visit and stay with me for the Bane, Trapped Under Ice, Cruel Hand and Alpha & Omega tour rolled through.
But it's few and far between.

yeah i know my roommates out there were friends of john mckaig, i went to a verse and have heart show at that gallery. i guess it just seemed to me that a lot of kids came out and really got into it. but yeah, it wasn't too often.

most of those kids seem to like hip-hop, indie, or folk. maybe ann arbor will never aquire a "scene" i am just saying it would be nice if it did. but alot of the old radicalism that this city used to breed has died. no one is angry about anything anymore. everyone is passive.

In the early 2000's, I think Ann Arbor had the best scene in the state. Tons of touring bands, including all of the Japanese and Euro bands, The Bad Idea House, State Control Records, great cross-pollination of genres, and a ton of punk bands.

from 1993-2000, kalamazoo pretty much owned every other "scene" in michigan. we had the bands/labels/ect, even detroit couldnt match us for quality bands.(unless you considered shit like earthmover/pitbull/cold as life to be "quality bands") during that timeframe almost nothing went on in grand rapids. what little did go on in GR during the 90s was mainly crust punk oriented as opposed to the more "ebullition/90s emo" style that was preferred in the 'zoo. between 1998-2000 it all went to shit in kalamazoo and grand rapids started producing better bands. right now grand rapids seems to be the place to be in west michigan for hardcore.

i do have fond memories of the 10 weston in grand rapids. saw tons of good bands, malakhai, hamilton, last days of august, wolves (stayed at my house), examination of the..., since by man, ruehaeda, forstella ford (multiple times, dont really care for that band too much anymore), cast in fire, laughing dog, catherer, voorhees, kung fu rick, lack(denmark), suicide note, kaki o badi, with arms still empty (multiple times, they got a hell of alot better when they kicked out their first singer, arik i think his name was?)don knotts and probably a shitload more im forgetting. saw reversal of man/combatwoundedveteran/creation is crucifixion/mara akate/castahead/fable at our town catering and cobra kai/darkest hour/sunday flood at some other resteraunt type place in GR that i hardly remember. this was all between 1998-2002.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing to reminisce but often people get too caught up with it.
