Do they seriously cancel every show?! Did they play that show at The Shelter with H8 Inc after The Suicide Machines show in July?

Yeah, they played.

No they didn't, bloody knuckle combat replaced them. I was the only one who went.

Whoops I just assumed it was them since they share a lot of the same members and I saw them loading in downstairs in between bands. My bad.

Review: Face Reality sounded really cool. Never heard of them before. Next up were my three favorite Michigan bands. RZL DZL, what's not to love? Good seeing Haroun briefly and talkin to Will for a minute. It had been a few years. Nightbringer sounded great. Excited for new 7"s. Easy Action is the best band in MI. Not much else to say.

Kind of weak, unfortunately. All of the bands were good and I actually liked the Shelter for the first time ever. Bummed because it was a cool show on a Saturday night...wish more people could have made it.

I was completely taken by surprise by Easy Action. I never heard them before the show and I absolutely love them.

That's awesome. Track down their "Friends of Rock n Roll" LP, it's more along the lines of how they sound now. The first one is great, but isn't as distorted and aggressive, I had to hear the second one before the first one made sense to me. They play a lot of new songs live.

My thoughts on the show... This was exactly the kind of bill I had in mind when we started doing these, like an old CB's show with 4 top notch local bands, all generally hardcore but with variety in the sound. So I was really psyched about that, and I thought all the other bands nailed it. The turn out would have packed Refuge, but the Shelter is pretty big so it seemed sparse. Part of the reason we do shows at the Shelter is there's no bullshit involved. We give them a date and a deposit, done and done. I don't know if people realize it, but we (Len and I) are responsible for running the door, paying the bands, paying the sound guy, etc. The Shelter pretty much just runs the bar. Everything else is up to us. It was cracking me up last night that people were bring their dinner in, but fuck it, why not? Totally ok.

Back to the turnout, it was alright by the numbers, but if you consider we personally gave 1000 people fliers (I stood at the door at the NA and Suicide Machines shows and gave everyone a flier as they came in, similarly with SOIA and other small shows), the response ratio is pathetic. I've been wracking my brain all summer trying to figure this stuff out. I go to a variety of shows, often by myself, and I only recognize a couple people from one show to another. There are a lot of people in the metro area who like punk/hc, but you wouldn't know it from how many people are ever at one show. I don't know if people don't care, if they're just into their tiny little niche, they won't travel, hell, I don't know. We do these shows because we want to have a good time with this music and share that with other people, and it seems backwards that its so difficult sometimes. That aside, last night was a really good time, and thanks to the bands and everyone who came out and made it so.

I think it was Graham that started the dinner-bringing thing. It enhanced my experience.

i feel like michigan kids nowadays are extremely area oriented. most shows i go to unless theyre at the magic stick are 3/4 just kids from that area that dont travel anywhere else. hopefully the more and more shows you guys do at the shelter kids will get more comfortable with driving there, and the turnouts will grow with each show. i know that cro mags show will be packed, they sold out smalls last time, and i feel like thats a venue that a lot of people wont drive to. as weird as it is, the economy really has hurt shows too, lets kids be more picky, and theyre more likely to just stay in their area.

In the backroom of the shelter they had popcorn and hot sauce. $1.50. heads up for the cro-mag munchies. Veggie dogs and pretzels too.

i went to see enabler that night at hybrid moments. i figured they were on tour and needed the support more than the locals and i wanted to check that place out since it's new.
enabler definitely ripped it, if you are into cursed type stuff at all, do yourself a favor and check them out.
i think hybrid moments is a really sweet spot for smaller shows (similar to refuge , maybe a little smaller). the kids running it seemed really nice and enthusiastic. i hope they can make a go of it, although if you want 50 bucks for a first press of a converge 7 inch i think ebay is a better way to go than a retail situation. but hopefully they know something i don't cuz it's a really cool little spot.

I don't know if this is a controversial opinion, but I think local bands deserve way more support than some touring bands that really haven't done anything, or even most touring bands in general. It's mostly people in bands that put on shows, and provide a place for most of the touring bands coming through to have a place to play in the first place. And in the case of the show Saturday, all 4 bands were fucking great and have really good records.
